Théâtre Alphonse-Desjardins

FINALIST – ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION

The future Théâtre Alphonse-Desjardins will be a performing arts venue located in the heart of the Espace culturel, opposite the Centre d’art Diane-Dufresne. Provencher_Roy proposed an architectural and landscape scheme that was essentially the expression of a desire to create more than a theatre, but rather a magical place that residents would want to make their own. As the site constitutes the cornerstone of downtown Repentigny, the proposal sought the composition of an ensemble that was fully integrated into its environment: a seamless meld of architecture, landscape and urban design.

The Provencher_Roy design team explains the design statement for the Théâtre Alphonse-Desjardins in Repentigny.

Thus, the landscape concept went beyond the confines of the venue and took root in neighbouring gardens, to unify the site and draw people towards the performance venue—and into it. The introduction of a green roof emerging from the Allée de la Création, for its part, contributed to forging close ties with the urban scale, while the theatre, radiant and inviting, offered itself to the city by the openness of its four facades.
