Diversity

The World Trade Centre Montreal is located on the fringe of historic Old Montreal on an extensive 14,164 m2 city block. The large-scale complex, which is designed to accommodate a highly diversified clientele, incorporates a wide range of functions and services aimed at promoting trade at the regional, national and international levels.

The complexity of the project lay in finding the functional fluidity required to combine the different structures into a coherent whole—contemporary yet respectful of the architectural and historical values evidenced in the surrounding heritage environment.

A study of the area was conducted, along with an analysis of the historical, cultural and structural value of the 17 buildings on the site, which were built between 1840 and 1960. Based on the recommendations in the study, some buildings were preserved, whereas in other cases, due to the advanced state of deterioration of the structures, only the façade or characteristic elements were preserved.
