Baril Elementary School

The Old Baril School, located in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, was built in 1910 and had a heritage value of interest both for the history of Montreal architecture and for the neighbourhood community.

The original building was in a state of irreversible deterioration due to the presence of significant mould and the option of demolishing it became the only feasible option. The design of the new replacement building integrates the restoration, renovation and enhancement of the historical portal of the original school.

The concept of the new school is largely inspired by the original building and tries, by its layout and its volumetry, to restore the significant presence of the institution in its context so as to respect the mission of the Baril School which largely exceeded its pedagogical role. Baril nouveau is in keeping with its era and with current issues.
