The new Sorel-Tracy detention centre is organized around a clear and hierarchical composition that brings together security, operational efficiency, and the quality of living environments.

Housing 297 cells, the project articulates all custodial and administrative functions into legible volumes where controlled circulation and spatial coherence shape the overall experience of the site.

Developed over two levels, the housing pavilions are conceived according to a living unit model. Cells, dormitories, and multi-sector areas are arranged around secure courtyards specific to each pavilion, preserving privacy and limiting direct sightlines between adjacent outdoor spaces. The architecture frames daily life without fragmenting it, offering ordered and clearly defined environments at a human scale.

The intake, admission, visiting, healthcare, sociocultural and sports facilities, along with workshop areas, form the active custodial zone of the complex. Administrative functions and staff areas are grouped within a separate non-custodial zone, ensuring a clear separation of uses and efficient management of internal flows.

The site plan promotes a straightforward reading of access points. Two distinct parking areas lead to the reception pavilion, a mandatory point of entry and the interface between the public realm and the controlled environment of the centre. Circulation paths are short, rationalized, and placed under direct supervision to limit unnecessary movement and reinforce overall security.

In its final expression, the project seeks simplicity and functionality. Its refined silhouette reflects a commitment to spatial efficiency, reduced travel distances, and a formal intention to synthesize the complexity of its program into a concise architectural composition.
