In the Sainte-Marie neighbourhood, Larivière Street is undergoing an ambitious transformation as the very first permanent sponge street in Québec.

Located between De Lorimier Avenue and Parthenais Street, this previously paved stretch has been completely redesigned to capture, slow down, and filter rainwater.

A sustainable stormwater management system has been implemented, combining retention basins, permeable surfaces, and abundant vegetation. In total, a volume of 900 m³ of runoff will be captured and managed directly on site, helping to relieve pressure on the existing stormwater system. This project is part of a broader vision of climate change adaptation and urban greening, while also aiming to concretely improve quality of life in a dense and vulnerable sector.

On the north side of the street, Parc des Royaux has also undergone a major redevelopment. A new concrete skatepark, designed in collaboration with the Association Skateboard Montréal (ASM), has been built. The regrading of the site made it possible to integrate a “water square”, which complements the planned rain gardens along the park’s perimeter. The transformed street now connects directly with this green space, forming a cohesive and climate-resilient urban ensemble.

A public consultation held in fall 2023 allowed residents to collectively reflect on the future uses of the street and park, promoting a sense of community ownership. This process was accompanied by a public art competition, carried out in collaboration with the City’s Public Art Bureau. The winning piece by Québec artist Patrick Bérubé, titled Écologie des lieux, will be integrated into the site, enriching the space. Together, these interventions make this pilot project a model of urban resilience and street design innovation at the Montréal scale.
